Origami and stories from Japan

Yasuko Ohbayashi from our sister city Eniwa visited at the beginning of the holidays and spent the afternoon visiting our branch libraries at Temuka and Geraldine, and reading stories and teaching Origami at Timaru Library. Yasuko demonstrated traditional Japanese “apron theatre” with the story “The giant turnip” and read books that had been presented to Timaru Libraries by Eniwa Library. Everyone loved doing Origami especially the trick boat with disappearing mast! Thank you Yasuko!!!

Winner of the Ursula Moray Williams Cup 2011

Congratulations to Mafoa Siale, Winner of the Ursula Moray Williams Cup for Children’s Writing!!!! Mafoa, from Bluestone School, was also winner of the Year 7-8 category for her story "Winter". UK judge Colin Davison awarded the prize to Mafoa's story "for its wonderful use of language, that reminded me of the power of folk legends".

Celebrate winter at the library!

It’s Gumboot day at the libraries today … kids arriving in their gumboots earn an entry into a prize draw. Friday is Slipper day so come into Timaru, Temuka or Geraldine Libraries wearing your favourite slippers for a chance to win a prize. It’s not too late to enter the kids’ holiday competitions and scavenger hunt, but be quick… entries need to be in by midday on Thursday 28th July.
